Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority

NOTICE OF HOUSING CHOICE VOUCHER (SECTION 8) WAITLIST CLOSING

Effective April 21, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.,  the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority closed the waitlist for the Housing Choice Voucher Program (Section 8) and is no longer accepting applications at this time.

For families that applied online during the BMHA waiting list opening, BMHA will select 4,000 applicants for the HCV Waiting List through a randomized, computer process. All families who completed the application process during this time will receive an email at the email address provided during the application process, which informs them if they were selected or not selected to be on the waiting list.

Our Vision

The Purpose of the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority is multi-faceted. It is our intention to create programs and provide services to our resident population and the broader Buffalo community within the parameters set by these overall goals:

To provide safe, clean, affordable housing to residents of the City of Buffalo that will be considered housing of choice.

To encourage and participate in strategic redevelopment of city's neighborhoods.

To offer all residents equal access to desirable housing and communities.

To Foster a sense of purpose and pride that will encourage family self-sufficiency.

To encourage tenant participation and involvement in BMHA operations and services as well as providing access to entrepreneurial development and employment opportunities.

Established

  • Established in 1934 as a public corporation with its own independent status.
  • Governed by a Board of seven members, five of whom are appointed by the Mayor and two of whom are elected at-large from the tenant population.
  • Board Chair and vice chair are elected from among board members each year
  • Operates in compliance with Federal, New York State and City of Buffalo housing standards
  • Manages 31 developments within the City of Buffalo
  • Provides 4307 housing units within the City of Buffalo
  • Distributes 1444 housing vouchers through the Section 8 Voucher Program
  • Screens applicants and inspects apartments annually
  • Provides rent that is never more than 30% of gross income
  • Presents job training and educational opportunities for tenants
  • Collaborates with many social service agencies, located on-site for easy resident access
