Mayor Brown Kicks Off his 2013 Summer Youth Internship Program and Challenges the Business Community
BUFFALO—Mayor Byron Brown today announced that the applications for the 2013 Summer Youth Internship Program are now available. He also called upon local businesses to join him in his goal of providing employment opportunities this summer to youth in the City of Buffalo.
“I am excited to kick off another successful season of my Summer Youth Internship Program, offering our youth meaningful work experience that will be with them for a lifetime,” said Mayor Brown. “Through my program, city youth are able to learn and develop the skills needed to be successful in the workplace. I am also challenging private and public-sector employers to participate in the program by providing summer job opportunities.”
Young people between the ages of 14-21 will be employed for 6 weeks in the summer, the majority of program participants working from July 8th – August 16th. Each participant will be screened, assessed and receive training in the following areas: job readiness, life skills and financial literacy. The City of Buffalo Division for Youth will provide youth counselors who will serve as monitors and provide program support for everyone participating in the program. College students are encouraged to apply as the demand is great for college age interns. Since 2006, Mayor Brown’s Summer Youth Employment Program has offered 17,256 summer employment opportunities to city youth.
“I want to encourage the business community to get involved in my Summer Youth Internship Program, and also thank participating employers for their continued investment in our young people and the future of our city,” said Mayor Brown. “These jobs are critically important, enabling city youth to learn new skills, earn extra money to offset household expenses and prevent summer learning loss which can impact our most vulnerable families.”
