Description |
The proper right door is decorated with a female figure (representing Ethnology)
holding a skull and Indian implements of peace and war. The
proper left door
is decorated with a female figure (representing History) shading her eyes as if
peering into the future seeking knowledge. A lamp in her right hand
represents the search for knowledge in the past. The transom appears
supported by one female figure holding a globe (representing Science)
and another female figure holding a palette and brush (representing
Art). The door panels below the figures are inset with plaques,
which read:
"These Gates the Gift of Andrew Langdon to the Buffalo Historical
Society. A.D., M.C.M."

Bio. |
The artwork for the bronze doors and transom are based on sketches and
suggestions made by then Historical Society President, Andrew Langdon.
The doors weigh 1,200 pounds each and the transom weighs 1,500 pounds.
