Graduation Ceremony For New Buffalo Firefighters

MAYOR BROWN SPEAKS AT GRADUATION CEREMONY FOR NEW BUFFALO FIREFIGHTERS

It’s the largest recent class of firefighters hired by the city

July 29, 2015 - Mayor Byron Brown and Buffalo Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield today spoke at the graduation ceremony for 109 new Buffalo Firefighters.  It’s the largest recent class of firefighters hired by the City of Buffalo.

“Today, we honor and welcome 109 new firefighters into the Buffalo Fire Department family,” said Mayor Brown during a speech to the new class. “This class reflects the rich racial and ethnic diversity of our great city, and I couldn’t be more proud. On behalf of city residents, I thank each and every one of you for your call to public service.”

The new class of firefighters continues Mayor Brown’s trend of increasing the number of minorities and women in the Fire Department – a byproduct of a large number of retirements over the last couple of years.  The addition of 109 new firefighters brings the total number of sworn personnel in the Buffalo Fire Department to 684.  All of these new firefighters must reside in Buffalo as a result of the recently negotiated fire contract.

Another class is expected to be sworn in by the end of the year.
