Mayor Brown Proclaims April 'National Organ Donor Awareness Month'

Proclamation Supports Transplant Miracles’ Efforts to Increase Donor Registration in Western New York

April 15, 2015 – Today, the City of Buffalo officially recognized the efforts of the Transplant Miracles Foundation through a proclamation by Mayor Byron Brown declaring April “National Organ Donor Awareness Month.”

“I’m pleased to join the Transplant Miracles Foundation in helping to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation during National Organ Donor Awareness Month in April,” said Mayor Brown.  “Statistics show that one person who donates organs can save up to eight lives.  I encourage city residents to help spread the message about the importance of organ donation and show their support by registering as donors.”

Throughout this month, Transplant Miracles has been working with private partners and non-profit groups to spread the word about the importance of registering new organ donors in its effort to make Buffalo the premier “Donate Life” city in America.

“We are honored to have the support of Mayor Brown and so many dedicated individuals, organizations and businesses who understand that organ donation makes miracles happen,” said Jack O’Donnell, Founder of The Transplant Miracles Foundation. “An organ donation saved my life and we’re working every day to save the lives of others who are currently waiting for a transplant. We strongly encourage all Western New Yorkers to be Miracles Workers and register as donors today.”

Here in New York, more than 10,000 individuals are currently awaiting transplants. As Mayor Brown’s proclamation notes, just one organ donor can save up to eight lives; a tissue donor can improve twelve or more lives by restoring eyesight, helping fight infections in burn patients and preventing the loss of mobility and disability.

Mayor Brown’s proclamation goes on to encourage Buffalo residents to learn more about organ donation and make their wishes known to friends and family. Those who want to register should visit UNYTS to learn more.
