MAYOR BROWN, CITY MERCHANTS PROMOTE  ‘SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY’

In an effort to encourage holiday shopping downtown and citywide, the city of Buffalo will offer free parking at metered spaces on Black Friday

November 25, 2014 – Today Mayor Byron Brown and city-wide retailers gathered at the Queen City’s first pop-up retail location at the Market Arcade Building to encourage people to shop local this holiday season and support small businesses in Buffalo on Saturday, November 29, 2014,  a day labeled as ‘Small Business Saturday’.  Hoping to drive business to stores and restaurants in Buffalo, the city will suspend parking meter enforcement on Friday, November 28th, making parking free at all its metered spaces on “Black Friday”.

Regular parking rates will apply in public parking garages and private lots. The city will still enforce parking restrictions in loading zones and disabled-only parking spaces.

American Express (AmEx) is once again coordinating the Small Business Saturday campaign, which is aimed at helping independent small businesses compete with big-box stores and chains on the Saturday in between Black Friday and Cyber Monday. AmEx provides small businesses with various tools and support to get the message out to consumers to “shop small.”

Mayor Brown concluded, “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and usually owned by people who have a vested interest in the community, in its schools, in the quality of life.  Please show your support this holiday season for small business owners, among the most generous supporters of civic groups, local charities and youth sports in Buffalo.”

Small business owners from city-wide shopping districts joined Mayor Brown at today’s news conference at Queen City Pop-Up: Holiday Edition in the historic Market Arcade Building located at 617 Main Street.  Mayor Brown was joined today by Queen City Pop-Up Vendors: Buffalo Adore, Azariah’s Innocence, Preferred Werk, Uniquely You and Rust Belt Love. Also present were J. Christian Fashion, Sasmita Batik Indonesia, Queen City Gallery and Mazurek’s Bakery who are located in the historic Market Arcade Building.  P.S. Accessories Boutique, Gysma’s African Style and Priceless Home Décor were also present, highlighting the wide array of retail that the City of Buffalo has to offer.
