Queen City Pop Up Holiday Edition

MAYOR BROWN, BUDC KICK OFF QUEEN CITY POP-UP: HOLIDAY EDITION

November 3, 2014 – Mayor Byron Brown, The Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (BUDC), Buffalo Place and Working for Downtown today launched Queen City Pop-Up: Holiday Edition in the historic Market Arcade Building located at 617 Main Street.  Queen City Pop-Up is downtown’s first pop-up retail program designed to encourage retail activity along Main Street by creating new “pop-up” shops that feature local retailers.  The project activates empty storefronts by filling them with retailers on a short term basis, free of charge. Sinatra & Company agreed to provide rent-free retail space for Queen City Pop-Up participants.

“Queen City Pop-Up is a unique opportunity to highlight new and existing city retailers by bringing them downtown during the holiday season to showcase their products,” said BUDC Chairman, Mayor Brown.  “Queen City Pop-Up also complements the city’s investment in the ‘Cars Sharing Main Street’ project and the many other efforts of our public and private sector partners who are working with us to ensure that downtown Buffalo continues to grow and prosper as a 24/7 live, work and play destination.”

A Request for Proposals was recently released to identify local retailers interested in participating in this unique retail effort.  Five local retailers, representing retail outlets from all sections of the city, were selected to participate this year: Buffalo Adore; Preferred Werk; Azariah’s Innocence; Uniquely You and Rust Belt Love.  These retailers offer a unique mix of retail gift items such as clothing, artisan beauty products, hand-made jewelry, terrariums and other Buffalo themed gifts and accessories.

In addition, the fashion technology students from Buffalo State College have also agreed to assist in putting together the window displays in the empty storefront windows facing Main Street, bringing more exposure to the retailers and adding vibrancy to Main Street. Buffalo State’s partnership also ties in nicely with the recent news stories that more college graduates are choosing to stay in Buffalo and are residing in the greater downtown area.

Queen City Pop Up: Holiday Edition will run from November 3 through Christmas Eve.  Store hours are Monday – Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5:00 p.m.  For more information contact Brandye Merriweather, BUDC Downtown Development Coordinator & Manager at 716-362-8373 or go to www.buffalourbandevelopment.com, www.buffaloplace.com or www.workingfordowntown.org.
