Mayor Brown and Fire Commissioner Whitfield Dedicate New Fire Vehicles

City purchased ten new fire vehicles, including a Rehab/Mass Casualty Incident Vehicle, an Urban Search and Rescue Vehicle and Segways, at a cost of $643,742; Mayor Brown’s invested more than $16.7 million in the replacement and augmentation of Buffalo Fire’s entire fleet since 2006

September 16, 2013 – The Buffalo Fire Department has ten new fire vehicles.  Today, Mayor Byron Brown and Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield continued the city’s commitment to preparedness by taking part in a dedication ceremony for the BFD’s new state-of-the-art fire vehicles.

“We are happy to be replenishing our entire Buffalo Fire Fleet with new, modernized equipment,” said Mayor Brown.  “It’s important that our firefighters have the tools needed to do the best job possible.  Adding these new vehicles continues our commitment to providing the best fire protection possible for city residents and business owners.”

Today at Canalside, BFD Chaplains dedicated the following vehicles, marking the second round of additions to the BFD this year:

  • 1 Urban Search and Rescue Vehicle @ $99.000.00
  • 1 EMS Response Vehicle @ $37,000
  • 5 Command Response Vehicles @ $37,000/each ($185,000.00 total)
  • 1 Rehab/MCI Vehicle @ $307,742.00
  • 2 Segways @ $15,000.00

Back in March, a new Field Communication Unit and Aerial Truck, Ladder 4, went into service at a cost of $1.1 million, bringing the total investment in new BFD equipment and vehicles to over $16.7 million since 2006.

The Rehab/Mass Casualty Incident vehicle is a specially equipped vehicle that responds to major fires or emergencies at which the health and safety of the firefighters’ operating on the scene may be jeopardized by the nature of the incident or weather.  The city’s first Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) vehicle is a specialty function for fire and rescue agencies that involves locating, extricating, and providing immediate on-scene medical help to people who have become trapped in confined spaces because of structural collapses; transportation accidents;  or natural disasters.  Vehicle additions also include two new Segways, specialty units that will allow the BFD to cover more ground and respond more quickly to emergency situations.

Mayor Brown’s investment in public safety will not stop here; the city plans to hire a new class of firefighters in January.  A fire exam is scheduled for November 19.  Registration is now underway.
