Recruits will enter Buffalo Fire Department training academy

Mayor Byron W. Brown and Buffalo Fire Department Commissioner Garnell Whitfield Jr. today announced the city’s 2011 class of fire recruits.

“I congratulate the new firefighter recruits on making it to the training academy. I know they will train diligently and help to make our Buffalo Fire Department strong,” said Mayor Brown. “The entire department serves our residents with great dedication and professionalism. I wish the recruits the best of luck.”

There are 35 firefighter recruits in the 2011 class. During his tenure, Mayor Brown has brought 119 firefighters (three recruit classes) into the department. The recruits will enter the training academy, which begins Monday, April 18, 2011 and lasts two and a half months.

“We are extremely excited and grateful to Mayor Brown and his staff for yet another opportunity to infuse new blood into the Buffalo Fire Department,” said Fire Commissioner Whitfield. “This journey will be difficult for some and unfortunately impossible for others. It is not for the faint of heart or the weak. To be successful, you must be completely committed and remain focused in the face of tremendous adversity. You must learn to trust and depend on each other.”
The firefighter recruits that pass the training academy will graduate July 8, 2011.
