Challenge Deadline Moved from December 31, 2008 to January 21, 2009

Mayor Brown today announced that the annual property assessment challenge deadline will be moved from Wednesday, December 31st to Wednesday, January 21, 2009.

“With the inclement weather we have experienced recently and the need for some city residents to properly research their property’s fair market value and determine whether they should challenge their new property assessment, I recommended that the Common Council extend the challenge deadline by three weeks,” said Mayor Brown. “It’s important that any resident who wishes to challenge their new property assessment makes certain that their formal challenge is received by the city’s Department of Assessment and Taxation by January 21, 2009.”

According to the Department of Assessment and Taxation, challenges post marked on January 21st, but received via mail days later will not be accepted.

All challenges must be made in writing using a New York State form, which is available on the City of Buffalo website (www.city-buffalo.com), at Room 101 in City Hall or can be mailed to city property owners who call 851-5772.

The Common Council today unanimously approved Mayor Brown’s recommendation to extend the property assessment challenge deadline.
