Today, the first lady of America's historic civil rights movement will be laid to rest.  On behalf of the citizens of Buffalo, I convey my deepest sympathy to Coretta Scott King's family, but, like millions of other Americans, I am thankful for the life she led with such dignity, honor and dedication.

Coretta Scott King was a true American hero who embodied the essence of the civil rights movement.  Mrs. King's determination to persevere and fight on for equality and justice, following the tragic assassination of her beloved husband, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., gave hope and opportunity to countless Americans for years to come, regardless of their race, creed or ethnic origin.

I have directed that all flags on city-owned property will be lowered to half-staff in honor and recognition of Coretta Scott King's truly inspiring life.
