Mayor Brown Announces Early opening of Splash Pads at City Pools


Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that seven splash pads throughout the city will open early for Summer 2011.

“I am pleased that seven splash pads will open one month earlier than the scheduled July 1st date,” said Mayor Brown. “It is important for residents, especially our youth, to have places to cool off during the summer months.”

Splash pads adhere to the same schedules as pools: 11:00a.m.-7:00p.m., weather permitting. The only exception is Lanigan Splash Pad, which is open from 10:00a.m.-6:00p.m. All splash pads and pools are available July 1st to September 5th.
The City of Buffalo spent roughly $150,000 last year and $200,000 this year, through the Department of Public Works, specifically for pool and splash pad maintenance and repairs. These repairs include: deck and gutter masonry work, pool painting, filter and pump repair, electrical work and inspections, basic building and plumbing maintenance.

The Roosevelt and MLK Jr. Splash Pads are not open for public use yet due to renovations. MLK, Jr. is currently under construction and will be open next year. The Department of Public Works is using $3.9 million in capital funds to complete the MLK, Jr. Basin Project. The project will provide a new splash pad for summer months and a historic water feature for year-round enjoyment. Roosevelt will be refurbished as part of the upcoming Phase II Roosevelt Shelter House improvements.
Upgrades to public splash pads are planned for next year as well. Centennial Pool in LaSalle Park will undergo construction and receive $400,000 in capital improvements, including security lighting for the pool, a wading pool and landscape features. The renovations are in addition to the $3 million reconstruction project that allowed Centennial Pool to be open for public use in July 2010.
