Mayor Brown Announces Summer Police Foot & Bicycle Patrols

Police Patrols Will Focus on Commercial Districts, Residential Neighborhoods & Parks

Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the Buffalo Police Department’s foot and bicycle patrols in each of the Department’s five districts are prepared for another summer season, providing comprehensive patrol coverage in the city’s commercial districts, residential neighborhoods & parks.

“We launched this foot and bike patrol last summer to extend our police presence in every section of the city, putting police officers in more direct contact with residents, business owners and visitors,” said Mayor Brown. “Since 2006, we’ve added 125 police officers to the Department, created the highly effective Mobile Response Unit and installed 117 surveillance cameras, so putting these dedicated police patrols on the street is another important component of my Administration’s Zero Tolerance anti-crime policy.”

Like last summer, the foot and bicycle patrols will focus on the city’s commercial districts, adjoining residential neighborhoods and parks. Currently, BPD detail cars in every District are mandated to perform “park and walk” patrols on every shift. The foot and bike patrols will complement these ongoing activities.

The foot and bike patrol details are designed to make police officers more visible throughout the city. These patrols will be conducted in predetermined areas of each Police District and will occur during each District’s day and afternoon shifts (which are 6:00 a.m. – 4 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. – 1:30 a.m. respectively) and account for an approximate 40 manpower hours.

Because of the Buffalo Police Department’s enforcement of Mayor Brown’s Zero Tolerance anti-crime agenda, overall crime has been reduced in the city by approximately 11% since January 2006 and violent crime has been reduced by 4% in the same period of time. Since the beginning of this year, overall crime is down 3% compared to the same time period in 2009.
