Mayor Brown Honors Gold Medalist Steve Mesler

“Steve Mesler Day” Declared as City Welcomes Home Buffalo’s Olympic Hero

Mayor Byron W. Brown today honored Steve Mesler, United States Olympian and champion bobsledder, for his gold medal achievement in the 2010 Olympic Games by presenting Mesler with a Key to the City and declaring March 10, 2010 as Steve Mesler Day in the City of Buffalo. 

Mesler and his three teammates became gold medalists on February 27, 2010 in Vancouver, earning the first gold medal since 1948 for a United States four-man bobsled team.  Since his national debut during the 2001-2002 season, and throughout almost four years’ on his current team, Mesler has been a key member of every four-man bobsled team.

“Steve Mesler is a great athlete, Olympic champion and proud native of Buffalo,” said Mayor Brown. “We were all thrilled when Steve and his teammates, aboard the now famed ‘Night Train,’ achieved their exciting gold medal victory in Vancouver and Steve made it very clear how happy he was to share his victory with the residents of his hometown. We’re very proud of his remarkable achievement and are very happy to welcome him back home.”

The son of Lois and Ben Mesler, Steve grew up on Potomac Avenue and graduated from City Honors School. He and his teammates, Steven Holcomb, Justin Olsen and Curtis Tomasevicz of the “Night Train” crew, celebrated the United States' first four-man gold medal since 1948. In the 2009 World Championships in Lake Placid, Steve helped push the “Night Train” to the first world title for the United States men in half a century.  They also claimed the four-man bobsled World Cup title for the first time in 17 years for the United States and the overall World Cup crown the following season.

Mesler made his national team debut during the 2001-2002 season and was named as an alternate for the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City.  But his proper Olympic debut came in Torino, where he finished seventh in Todd Hays’ four-man sled.  After the 2006 Games and four seasons with Hays, he moved on to Steve Holcomb’s four-man sled.

Steve Mesler graduated with honors from the University of Florida in 2000 with a degree in Exercise and Sport Science. He was a Division I scholarship track and field athlete, competing in the decathlon. Since 2002, he has resided in Calgary, Alberta.
