Mayor Brown Announces City of Buffalo’s High Marks for Drinking Water

Mayor Brown today announced that the City of Buffalo has received high marks when it comes to the quality of its drinking water. In a report issued by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), the quality of Buffalo’s drinking water ranked number 15 out of 100 cities with a population over 250,000. Buffalo also had the highest rank among cities in the state of New York.

The report based its ranking on three factors: the total number of chemicals detected since 2004; the percentage of chemicals found of those tested; and the highest average level for an individual pollutant, relative to legal limits or national average amounts, including for the most common pollutants.

“We are pleased the EWG ranked us the best in the state and among the best across the U.S. when it comes to the quality of our drinking water, “said Mayor Brown. “I know our citizens count on us to deliver high-quality water and I congratulate our employees at Buffalo Water for a job well done.”

EWG’s ranking used information from state data bases and drinking water systems’ 2008 water quality reports. Buffalo’s latest annual water quality report detailed how the city’s drinking water met all state and federal drinking water requirements.

Buffalo Water is comprised of approximately 135 city employees who provide a reliable service to almost 300,000 residents and is managed through a public-private partnership with American Water.
