Shared Service Grant For Buffalo Sewer Authority And The Town Of Amherst

$414,615 grant from NYS Department of State will support project to share wastewater treatment services

The Buffalo Sewer Authority has joined the Town of Amherst to share the costs and responsibilities of wastewater treatment. The Town of Amherst will decommission part of its Water Pollution Control Facility to the Sewer Authority, saving the town more than $1 million annually. Compensation for taking on the town’s residual solids will provide the Buffalo Sewer Authority with about $155,000 every year.

“It is great to see cooperation between our city and the surrounding suburbs, especially teamwork that increases revenue and efficiency,” said Mayor Brown. “Any grant received from the state is greatly appreciated and I am certain that it will be put to good use.”
The Buffalo Sewer Authority owns and operates the second largest Wastewater Treatment Facility in New York State. As an alternative to noxious landfills, the Sewer Authority processes residual solids through incineration, a much more cost efficient method. Of the $10.1 million in grants across the state, the Sewer Authority received one of the largest awards for this valuable partnership.

The $414,615 grant from the Department of State Local Government Efficiency Implementation program will be used to offset the already million dollar project endured between the two municipalities. With the projected income for the Sewer Authority and savings for the Town of Amherst, this joint venture will pay for itself within the first year.

Other municipalities that continue to use landfills should consider the actions of the Town of Amherst. With the grant from New York State, Amherst is reaping the benefits of less sewage responsibility as well as saving over $1 million annually. Forwarding solids to the Sewer Authority’s Processing Facility can reduce operating costs greatly and make for fewer landfills.
