Mayor Brown Announces Cold Weather Warming Centers In City Of Buffalo

True Bethel Baptist Church and Father Belle Center to Provide Shelter from Cold Weather

As a follow up to the cold weather tips released earlier this week to City of Buffalo residents by Mayor Byron W. Brown and Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo, Mayor Brown today announced that his Administration has worked with True Bethel Baptist Church and the Father Belle Center to provide warming centers for any city resident seeking shelter from the current and anticipated cold weather.

“During harsh weather conditions such as these, it’s simply unsafe for anyone to be outside for prolonged periods of time.  This is why I have called for temporary warming centers to be established for those in need,” said Mayor Brown.  “Winter weather is something that we often take for granted, but it’s important to take extra safety precautions at times like these and to provide proper shelter for everyone, especially seniors, the disabled, children and pets.”

These two temporary warming centers, True Bethel Baptist Church, located at 907 East Ferry Street, and the Father Belle Center, located at 104 Maryland Street, will be opened from 4 pm today, Thursday, January 15 through Saturday, January 17 at 4 pm to any resident seeking shelter from harsh winter conditions.

Both Facilities have the capability to prepare food, and have each been provided with 100 cots and blankets from the Red Cross.

Funding for this initiative, which includes monies for staffing, food, etc., will be provided by the City’s Department of Community Services.   For additional information on these warming centers, please call the City of Buffalo’s 311 Call and Resolution Center.
