Mayor Brown Announces Seasonal Recycling Program

Public Works Department to collect leaves and autumn yard debris for mulching

Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced a seasonal recycling program to remove leaves and yard debris from the City of Buffalo.  The collection, which is scheduled to last through November 22, will be conducted by the City of Buffalo’s Public Works Department as a way to reduce costs associated with taking leaves and yard debris to landfills.

 “Our City’s Public Works Department is striving to collect as many leaves as possible to be composted,” said Mayor Brown.  “It is important for the city and the environment to keep yard-waste out of landfills.  By doing so, we are not only helping our environment, but we are also saving money.  Rather than paying for their disposal, we can reuse these leaves and turn them into soil enhancers to improve our local community gardens.”

To participate in this collection, city residents are asked to place their leaves in clear plastic bags, and leave them out on their curb before their scheduled garbage pickup.  By bagging leaves in this manner, collection costs are kept at a minimum; leaves should not be placed in garbage totes, as sending them to a landfill costs nearly twice as much as composting.  Also, residents should be advised that raking leaves into city streets is illegal and punishable by fine.

Although they are scheduled on the same days, leaves will be picked up separately from garbage, so city residents should not be concerned if they are left behind after garbage removal.

As an alternative to this pickup, the City is opening three drop-off locations in the city where residents can bring their unwanted leaves and lawn debris.  The three sites are:

Cazenovia Park
Golf course parking lot
South of Seneca Street, at the foot of Wildwood

Shoshone Park
Parking lot
North off of Hertel, at the foot of Beard

Seneca Street
1120, parking lot
Between Babcock and Smith

*Signage will be posted at all locations.

These drop-off sites will be open from 8:00 am – 5:00pm, Monday through Saturday until November 22nd.

After their collection, all leaves will be brought to Lardon Construction, Inc a registered composting facility.  The natural mulch produced by Lardon Construction will be donated to Grassroots Gardens of Buffalo, an organization that has helped to maintain community gardens at over sixty sites in Buffalo.
