BUFFALO – The City of Buffalo will partner with Re-Tree WNY this fall to continue ongoing reforestation efforts in the City of Buffalo. Re-Tree WNY was formed shortly after the 2006 October Surprise storm, with the goal of planting 30,000 trees throughout WNY over the next five years to replace those that were lost as a result of the storm. The City of Buffalo has agreed to allocate $50,000 towards public reforestation efforts within the city limits this fall. This money will be used to purchase trees to be planted by community volunteers on the public right-of-way (between street and sidewalk) and in parks. City block clubs, faith groups, school groups, and community organizations are all eligible to receive trees to plant on public lands in their neighborhoods. “Every neighborhood, every city block and every park in Buffalo was affected by the devastation of the October Surprise storm,” said Mayor Brown. “Our city’s proud legacy of an abundance of trees will be supported by partnerships such as this effort with Re-Tree WNY, which will help restore the losses we all sustained during last year’s storm. I look forward to the positive impact of this initiative and other programs that will restore our urban landscape to pre-storm conditions.” David Colligan, co-chair of Re-Tree WNY said, “The money that the city has made available will support the many volunteers in the city that have expressed an interest in tree planting but perhaps do not have available to them the resources to make it happen.” The City of Buffalo, which boasts the moniker City of Trees, has been mobilized by the October storm with citizens coming together to work toward a common goal of overcoming the storm’s devastation and maintaining Buffalo’s legacy of having one of the finest urban forests in the nation. Re-Tree’s successful spring planting, which resulted in the planting of over 1,200 trees throughout Buffalo and Western New York, is a testament to the feats that can be accomplished when the citizens of Buffalo work together. Paul Maurer, co-chair of Re-Tree WNY, stated, “On behalf of the Re-Tree WNY committee, we express our gratitude to the city block clubs and community groups who will put forth the volunteer power to make the city’s fall plantings a success; additionally, we are very grateful for the city’s financial support under the direction of acting Commissioner of Public Works Daniel Kreuz and Mayor Byron Brown.” City block clubs and community organizations wishing to receive trees to plant in their neighborhoods this fall may visit www.city-buffalo.com/retreewny or http://www.retreewny.org to find registration instructions, or call the Mayor’s Call and Resolution Center (716-851-4890). All registrations must be received by July 31st 2007. Registrations received after this date will not be considered for the 2007 fall planting. |
