MAYOR BROWN ANNOUNCES SECOND CITIZENS PARTICIPATION ACADEMY

BUFFALO—Applications for the spring session of the Mayor’s Citizens’ Participation Academy (CPA) initiative are now available. Classes for the spring session are scheduled to begin on March 27, 2007.

 

“After the success of the first Academy, we are looking forward to the spring session of the CPA,” said Mayor Brown. “In the first session, participants were able to gain a in-depth perspective of the day to day operations of city government and to discover the many ways in which government affects their quality of life. I am appreciative of the desire for residents to learn more about city government and do their part to make Buffalo a better city.”

 

The Academy gives participants an “insider’s” view of the structure and management of the City of Buffalo. During the Academy session, participants learn about many aspects of government, including education, public safety, community programs, and economic development. City Commissioners and Directors participate in each session, providing information about the structure, challenges and vision for their respective departments.

 

The Spring Session will mark the second session of the new initiative under the Brown Administration. Past Academy graduates included block club leaders, business owners and interested citizens. During the October Surprise storm, many participants were able to gain a different perspective of city government, as many had the opportunity to volunteer at the Mayor’s Call and Resolution Center and various warming centers, assisting fellow city residents affected by the storm.

 

“By providing residents with the opportunity to participate in government and gain an inside perspective on the inner workings of city government, it is our hope that the CPA class members will come to know the function of city government better and be inspired to become more involved in city-based activities,” said Oswaldo Mestre, Jr. Director of Citizen Services.

 

This free, 8-session course, designed for City of Buffalo residents ages 18 and over, is now offered during the spring and fall. Applications are available at the Division of Citizen Services, 218 City Hall and on the City’s website (www.city-buffalo.com), and will be accepted until March 2, 2007.
