Masten District Properties Focus of Clean-Up Effort

BUFFALOMayor Byron W. Brown today led personnel of various city departments in a clean-up effort of targeted blighted properties in the city’s Masten District. Masten District Councilmember Antoine Thompson and representatives of the Buffalo Public Schools joined Mayor Brown in announcing the effort.

“Our Administration is committed to removing blighted properties throughout the city and today we’re targeting these properties in Masten, especially several dilapidated properties that are in close proximity to the Lydia T. Wright School of Excellence,” said Mayor Brown. “As I announced last week with Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams, a key component of our shared Public School Safety and Security Initiative is the clean-up or removal of these eyesores near and around our public schools. We will also aggressively hold accountable the owners of these vacant properties and work to have them processed through Housing Court.”

Nineteen properties in Masten were targeted by the city’s clean-up effort, which included the participation of personnel from Public Works, Citizen Services (notably, the Mayor’s Impact Team and the Clean and Seal Team), Inspections and the Buffalo Police Department. The properties, many containing graffiti and overgrown lots, are located primarily along Fillmore Avenue and East Delavan.

“Graffiti is an ongoing problem within our city, we need consistent efforts like the one today, to improve the quality of life for the residents of this proud community,” said Councilmember Thompson. “I would like to thank the Mayor for targeting these properties for graffiti removal.”

Cleaning up the neighborhoods around schools is an excellent way to improve the quality of life in Buffalo,” said Buffalo Schools Superintendent Dr. James Williams. As the Mayor and I indicated last week, removing blight is a part of our overall plan to improve safety and security for our students. We applaud this important step by the Mayor and plan to continue working aggressively together to conduct clean-ups around all of our buildings.”
