Mayor Brown States Aid Key to Buffalo's Revival
BUFFALO—Mayor Byron Brown today applauded state leaders for the passage of the second consecutive on-time budget, which will increase state aid to Buffalo for important economic development projects and other city-based initiatives.
"I am pleased that the state Assembly and Senate agreed on the significant budget appropriations for the City of Buffalo," Mayor Brown said. "Importantly, this increased aid will help us help ourselves as we continue our effort to strengthen our tax base, increase jobs and implement programs that reduce the cost of city government." The 2006-07 state budget will provide Buffalo $46,391,000 in key aid, including: $26,391,000 in Local Assistance Aid (a 22.78% increase over the 2005-06 appropriation of $115,876,026), $10,000,000 in Efficiency Incentive Grant monies (an $8M increase over the Governor's original recommendation) and $10,000,000 for capital projects ($5M for land acquisition; $5M for demolitions). In addition, the state budget agreement includes $5,200,00 for the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus for purposes of land acquisition, demolition and other economic development purposes. Consequently, the state budget provides $15.2 million in new funds for creating shovel ready sites and neighborhood stabilization within the City. "We now have state funding that will help expand shovel-ready activity at the Buffalo Lakeside Commerce Park, additional aid for development and demolitions near the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, as well as critical funding for demolitions elsewhere in the city," said Mayor Brown. "Now we can begin the process of removing dilapidated buildings and making potential development sites shovel-ready for future investment. This is a significant boost for our economic development efforts." Mayor Brown credited the leadership of both the Assembly and Senate in delivering this important state aid to the city. "Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver showed his commitment to helping our efforts to improve Buffalo's economy," stated Mayor Brown. "By increasing the Governor's recommended local assistance aid from $12.7 million to $26.3 million, the Assembly Majority, including members of Buffalo's delegation led by Assembly Majority Leader Paul Tokasz, Assembly Members Robin Schimminger, Sam Hoyt, Crystal Peoples and Mark Schroeder, as well as key support from Senators Dale Volker, Bill Stachowski and Mary Lou Rath, they ensured that we would receive funding that will go a long way to helping my administration stabilize the city's finances. I now look forward to the Governor's prompt approval of the state budget."
