$684.3 million in Record State Funds Targeted for Buffalo

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron W. Brown today hailed the New York State Legislature for committing over half a billion dollars in state monies for a wide array of projects and initiatives occurring in the City of Buffalo.  A late add to the session was the creation of a $300 million program called Restoring New York’s Communities Initiative, which Mayor Brown advocated for the creation of at the beginning of the legislative session in January.

“According to our initial analysis, the outcome of this legislative session could very well bring the most state money – more than anyone can remember over the last 35 years – to Buffalo in a single year since the Erie Canal construction project and it rivals the NYS Thruway project and SUNY Construction Projects” said Mayor Brown. “For the first time, most of this money will be put into projects that will improve our future not just pay current expenses.  We plan to use this extraordinary support to lessen our reliance on state operating support in future years by building for the future.”

The state funds will be used for school construction programs, land acquisition for economic development, cultural tourism projects, demolition projects to improve neighborhoods and to clear land for development, for government efficiency efforts and municipal improvement projects (see attached).

“This outcome is the direct result my Administration’s identification of specific projects and initiatives that will strengthen Buffalo and of the extraordinary effort of the members of the Western New York State Legislative Delegation,” said Mayor Brown.  “The members of the delegation – from both sides of the aisle – have worked cooperatively and collaboratively for the benefit of the residents of the City of Buffalo.  On behalf of all Buffalonians, I thank our state representatives, in the Assembly and the Senate, for their work this session, which has brought significant resources that will contribute to our ongoing agenda to restore Buffalo’s vitality and competitiveness.”

“The state’s unprecedented allocation to the City of Buffalo will make this city stronger and, in turn, help our schools become stronger as well,” said Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. James A. Williams.  “By using funding increases to pay for real projects such as the additional monies the city has given the District, we can begin to address the ongoing challenges faced by this community and move toward improving the quality of education for our children and the quality of life for all of our citizens.”

The members of the Western New York State Legislative Delegation are: Assembly: Francine DelMonte, Jim Hayes, Sam Hoyt, Crystal Peoples, Jack Quinn III, Robin Schimminger, Paul Tokasz and Mark Schroeder (Sheldon Silver, Speaker); Senate: Marc Coppola, George Maziarz, Mary Lou Rath, Bill Stachowski and Dale Volker (Joseph Bruno, Majority Leader).
