Exterior rehabilitation project under way BUFFALO—Mayor Byron Brown this week announced that Buffalo City Hall is undergoing the first phase of construction to repair, rehabilitate, and restore the exterior masonry. The $3.9 million dollar project will restore the vibrancy and beauty to one of Buffalo's most magnificent buildings. "Buffalo City Hall is such an amazing building, with its sandstone exterior and multi-colored terra cotta ornamental tiles," said Mayor Brown. "The building needs to undergo this facelift, so that future generations can appreciate this building for years to come." All elevations of Buffalo City Hall are exposed to the weather, including the prevailing winds from Lake Erie to the west. This exposure has caused areas of loose or unsecured stone and terra cotta on the exterior masonry. The first phase of the project will include work done from the 15th floor to the top, Including: repairing the terra cotta and sandstone, waterproofing, masonry, anchoring, roofing and lighting replacement. The City hired the Buffalo-based firm of DiDonato Associates Engineering and Architecture, P.C. to inspect, survey, and assess the deterioration. This work was completed in 2005 and plans and specifications for the design were sent out to bid and awarded to Allstate/Progressive Joint Venture. City Hall's Observation Deck on the 28th floor will be closed to the public during the construction period. Phase 1 work is expected to be completed in Fall 2007. Progress can be viewed on the web at www.city-buffalo.com, under the news/calendar section of the website. |
