Proposed Safety Improvements at Main St./Kensington Ave./Humbolt Pkwy.

The City held an open house style meeting to obtain public feedback on proposed alternatives for safety improvements at the intersection of Main Street/Kensington Avenue/Humboldt Parkway. The meeting took place on January 19, 2017 at the Canisius College Science Hall Commons.

The following alternatives for safety improvements were proposed:

Alternative 1 – Restriping of Main Street and addition of traffic signal control (option 1) or revised stop sign control (option 2) for Kensington Avenue and the south leg of Humboldt Parkway.  This would allow southbound Main Street traffic turning left to flow freely either with coordinated signals or stop sign control.

Alternative 2 – Restriping of Main Street and the conversion of Kensington Avenue between the north and south legs of Humboldt Parkway to one-way southbound.  This alternative would allow two-way traffic on the north and south legs of Humboldt Parkway between Main Street and Kensington Avenue. The removal of the section of Kensington Avenue between the south leg of Humboldt Parkway and Main Street would create a more traditional four-way intersection without an island at Main Street and the south leg of Humboldt Parkway.

Alternative 3 – Restriping of Main Street and the conversion of Kensington Ave between the north and south legs of Humboldt Parkway to one-way northbound. This alternative would allow maintain one-way traffic on the north and south legs of Humboldt Parkway between Main Street and Kensington Avenue. The removal of the section of Kensington Avenue between the south leg of Humboldt Parkway and Main Street would create a more traditional intersection without an island at Main Street and the south leg of Humboldt Parkway.
