Business Hours: Owning a dog is one of the great American pastimes and privileges. Dogs fill the role of guide, guardian and companion. But owning a dog is a major responsibility as well. The responsibility extends not only to proper care and training of your dog, but also to your responsibility for the dog's behavior and compliance with all dog laws. Why should I license my dog? The dog license tag provides identification if your dog were to be lost or stolen and also protects the public health by preventing the spread of rabies from dogs to humans. Dog license tags saves lives of lost dogs ending up in the animal shelter by quickly identifying the dog and its owner, increasing the odds that they are reunited. It's also the law. What is the procedure for reporting a dog? The procedure for reporting an unlicensed dog or dog complaint is to call the Mayor's Hotline, 311. Dangerous dogs or dog activities should be reported to the police.
