How many fellows are accepted?
There is a maximum of 8 fellows accepted per session.
What are the deadlines for applying?
- Spring: January 15th
- Summer: June 8th
- Fall: September 1st
If I am not enrolled at a post-secondary academic institution, may I still apply?
Yes, you may still apply if you are not currently enrolled, provided you have already received a post-secondary degree.
Will I be informed of the receipt of my application?
Yes, you will receive an email confirmation of your application receipt.
What do I need to provide when applying?
Applicants must complete the application form posted online AND submit a copy of their resume, cover letter, and writing sample.
What type of references should I list?
Applicants should submit three (3) academic or professional references. References should be able to speak to the applicant’s work ethic, academic performance, and any other relevant information.
What type of writing sample should I submit?
Applicants should submit a recent writing sample (no more than three (3) pages) they have completed for an academic class or in a similar setting. The writing sample should consist only of the applicant’s efforts; group projects are not permissible.
After I submit my application documents, what is the next step?
A panel comprised of Division of Citizen Services staff will review all submitted materials and select the most promising candidates. Selected candidates will be scheduled for an interview.
When will I be notified of my acceptance into the Urban Fellows Internship Program?
Applicants will receive an email at least 1 week before the start of the internship session.
Does the internship offer credits?
Yes, the internship may be used for academic internship credit. It is the Fellow’s responsibility to coordinate with their academic institution regarding the necessary requirements for internship credit.
What kind of skills are you looking for?
The desired qualities for an Urban Fellow include: good analytical, drafting, and language skills; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work well with others, and creativity.
What kind of duties will I be asked to perform?
- Potential projects include, but are not limited to:
- Drafting and preparing official documents
- Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings
- Compiling statistics
- Conducting research
- Developing and drafting new programming
- Evaluating ongoing projects
- Conducting and leading presentations
When is the starting date of the internship?
Selected candidates will be provided with an internship offer. All details will be in the letter including dates of the internship and name of the supervisor.
Can I adjust the length of the internship to fit my needs?
No, the internship time is set to a two month minimum, completing at least 10-15 hours per week.
What are my chances of employment with the City of Buffalo after the internship?
The internship program is not related to employment with the City of Buffalo. There should be no expectation of employment within the City of Buffalo after an internship.
